Today a junior level developer had made a human error mistake, instead of updating a record on production server, he has update the record in development server.

When we did RCA for this issue, we found that this problem caused because of similar server names

Production    Server Name : SRVIMUMPSQL

Development Server Name : SRVIMUMDSQL

Generally, that developer makes a connection to SQL Server Name by selecting a name from Drop Down menu and by mistake he selected a Server name SRVIMUMPSQL instead of SRVIMUMDSQL as shown below.

Adding to this, this list was huge as this list accumulate the list of servers that you have been working on, starting from the point of installation of  SQL Server management studio.

Thus we decided to clear this Most Recent User Server List from SSMS drop down menu.


How to Clear drop down list of Recent Connection from SQL Server Management Studio ?

Most Recent User Server List in SSMS drop down menu is known as MRU list.

SQL Server 2005

  1. Make sure that the "SQL Server management studio" is not opened
  2. Go to "Run"
  3. Type this command "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell\" and click "OK". This will open up the folder where this list is stored.
  4. Now search for the file "mru.dat" and rename this file.
  5. After renaming, launch the SQL Server management studio and you will not see any of the most recently used servers in the list.

For SQL Server 2008

  1. Make sure that the "SQL Server management studio" is not opened
  2. Go to "Run"
  3. Type this command "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Shell\" and click "OK". This will open up the folder where this list is stored
  4. Now search for the file "SqlStudio.bin" and delete / rename this file.
  5. After deleting, launch the SQL Server management studio and you will not see any of the most recently used servers in the list.

Note: – Once you delete SqlStudio.bin file, you will lost the other SSMS setting which you might have saved. So after deleting this file, you need to reconfigure your SSMS options as shown below.

  1. @Devesh, that’s for SQL Server 2012 (Denali). For 2008 R2 and below, you can’t do that.
