What is Auto Recovery (AUTO SAVE) feature in SQL Server Management Studio ?

AUTO Recovery is a feature in SQL Server management studio that automatically saves open sql scripts, after a user definable period of time. By default this setting is set for 5 minutes.

What Could be the issue, if this feature in remain turned on ?

SSMS window might get hang / unresponsive for some seconds due to “Saving Auto Recovery information“.

How can I disable Auto Recovery (AUTO Save) in SSMS?

There is no option available in SSMS to turn of this option. You need to edit registry to achieve this objective.

The following are the steps to Turn-off this “Saving Auto Recovery information” option for SSMS

  • Select Start, Goto Run
  • Type RegEdit, Enter
  • Go to this path

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Shell\General\AutoRecover

Change the value for “Auto Recover Enabled” by Double click on the “Auto Recover Enabled, you can see the Edit window with current value “1“, change this value to “0” then press ok.

In case you want to turn on this option later on, you can Turn on this option by setting value back to “1” on the same path.
