SQL Server 2011, Denali, introduces a new alternative to identity columns. There is a new CREATE SEQUENCE statement that can be used to create global sequence generators . This quite similar feature which already exists in Oracle and DB2.

  • Sequence is a User Defined object that generates the numeric values based on the values specified.
  • Sequence can be generated either in ascending or descending order.
  • Sequence is not associated to table like IDENTITY.
  • Sequence are much faster in generating numbers compared to IDENTITY.

Note : sp_sequence_get_range is system proc which reads a range of numbers from a number sequence object in SQL Server DENALI. [More Information]
